Kendall FD Parade 2018

by Maria on July 13th, 2018

Finally, there was a break in the heat wave. Today's high was only 80 degrees. That's still hot, but it's more than 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. It was a beautiful evening, and that encouraged almost everyone in Kendall to come out for the parade. There was a great crowd, and it was a pleasure to march with our friends in the Kendall Fire Department.

For color guard, we had Kristen and Mike H. carrying the banner, TJ carrying the American flag and Nancy guarding the flag with a rifle. We had no flutes or clarinets, but we had Margaret and Cindy on alto sax and Jack and Maria on tenor sax. For brass, we had five - yes, five! - trumpets: Mike B., Matt, Kayla, Tom J. and Bob. Anya played baritone and Josh played sousaphone. For percussion, we had Theresa on bells, Scott M. on snare drum, Steve on bass drum and Andy on cymbals.
We officially welcomed TJ and Kayla, Tom J. and Kristen's son and daughter, as new members of the band. TJ just graduated from high school and Kayla is entering 11th grade. For years, they've been marching as banner carriers or in the color guard. Tonight, TJ carried the American flag during the parade and played the cymbals in the beer tent. As a result of one well-timed crash in Gonna Fly Now, one of the cymbals inverted. A couple of people tried to revert it, but nothing worked. Finally, Tom put it on the ground, knelt on it and pulled up on the edge. That worked! Kayla and Tom played trumpet, and Kristen marched with the color guard.
After the parade, we had a good time playing some of our concert music in the beer tent. We had plenty of time since we were the at the front of the parade. It also helps that it is still daylight until almost 9:30 pm.

Our next event is the Hilton FD Department Parade on Thursday, July 12. See you there!
