Penfield Independence Day Parade 2018

by Maria on July 4th, 2018

Hot! Hot! Hot! It's a good thing this parade was in the morning. Even at 10:00 am, the temperature was already into the 80s. We know it's important to stay hydrated, so we bring our own bottled water to the parade. However, most of us had finished our water two-thirds of the way through the parade. Thank goodness the parade organizers had multiple golf carts delivering water throughout the parade route.

This parade is televised, and the organizers want the bands to stop in the review area and play for 45 seconds. Since it was so hot, we figured it would be appropriate to play something steamy, so we chose Basin Street Blues.

In spite of the hot weather, we had a good turn-out. Bob and Anya's sons, Ryan and Grant, carried the banner. Bob K. carried the American flag and Mike H. was the guard. For woodwinds, we had Tara and Karen G. on flute, Kelly and Karen R. on clarinet, Margaret and Steve on alto sax, and Maria on tenor sax. For brass, we had Scott W., Bob and Matt on trumpet, Anya on baritone and Josh on sousaphone. For percussion, we had Scott M. on snare drum, Jon on bass drum and Andy on cymbals.

The heat wave - temperatures into the 90s - is forecast to continue for five more days! That means our next parade, the Chil-E Fest on Wednesday, will also be a hot one. If you can stand the heat, come and see us.
