Spencerport FD Parade 2018
by Maria on June 9th, 2018
It was another beautiful warm and sunny evening,. The Spencerport parade always draws a good crowd, especially when the weather is nice. We marched with our friends in the Clifton Fire Department.
We parked at the back of the Tops parking lot and walked the path on the old railroad bed to the beginning of the parade. Last year the path was overgrown with brush. This year, it looked like someone had recently run some machinery through to clear it. As as result, the path was strewn with large broken branches, and we really had to watch our step.
Even though we only had ten marchers, we sounded good. In the judging area, we played Ghost Riders. We had Sarah on flute, Margaret on alto sax, Maria on tenor sax, Doug and Mike B. on trumpet, Art and Sue on trombone, Josh on sousaphone, Scott M. on snare drum and Andy on bass drum.
Update: We took second place in Spencerport for playing Ghost Riders in the judging area.
The parade came to a halt while we were marching on Lyell Avenue. There was an empty lawn chair on the side of the street amid the spectators. Art strolled over, sat down and made himself comfortable. When the parade resumed, Art jumped back in place.
After the parade, we played a few tunes in the beer tent. One of the highlights of the evening was playing Land of 1000 Dances with The Mark Time Marchers and the Hilton Generations Band. The sound from over 30 musicians was amazing.
At our last parade in York, Doug's hat disappeared in the beer tent. Fortunately, one of his sons, Tim - who plays percussion with us, but couldn't make it tonight - lent his hat to Doug to wear for this parade.
Update: We learned that we took second place in York.
Our next parade is the Bergen Park Festival on Saturday, June 10. We'll be marching in the parade and doing a concert afterward. See you there!
