York FD Parade 2018

by Maria on June 5th, 2018

It was another hot hazy summer-like day with scattered showers. We were lucky that the strongest weather went east of us. However, it reminded those of us who have marched with Kelley's Heroes since the beginning that many years ago we marched a parade in York in spite of a tornado watch had been issued for Livingston County.

Thirty minutes before the parade started, Matt H. realized he had brought his Mark Time Marchers folio instead of his Kelley's Heroes folio. Maria had her car, so she drove him back to his car. They were lucky to catch the shuttle back to the the staging area.

Just as we started our warm-up, Tim realized that his snares weren't touching the head of the drum. Doug produced a pair of needle-nose pliers, and he, Tim and Scott M. had the drum fixed in a few minutes.

Nancy and Kristen carried the banner. Tom J. and Kristen's son, TJ, carried the American flag while Bob K. carried a rifle to guard it. Normally, Steve and Margaret bring all the color guard equipment to our parades, Tonight, they couldn't march because their daughters had a dance recital. Margaret dropped off the equipment at Maria's house. Maria put it in the car and brought it never noticing that there was no holster for the American flag. But TJ was a real trooper; he  carried the American flag without a holster. Later in the beer tent, TJ played cymbals. While we were playing in the beer tent, Doug put his hat on one of the picnic tables. By the time we were done playing, it was gone.

Update: Doug's hat was found! When Tara came to the Hamlin parade, she had two hats. and one of them was Doug's.

We had a whole row of low brass and a whole row of trumpets: Art, Scott M. and Zach on trombone, Anya on baritone, and Doug, Matt H., Tom J. and Bob on trumpet. Don H. played the tuba parts on his helicon.

Woodwinds included Tracey and Tara on flute, Kelly and Jodi on clarinet, Maria on alto sax and Jack on tenor sax.  Percussion included Don S. and Tim on snare drums and Andy and Jon on bass drums.

Update: We took second place at York for playing Ghost Riders in the judging area.

Our next event is the Spencerport Fire Department Parade on Thursday, June 7. See you there!
